F – Recalled - out and across the road and field, a quick circle to her bird.

R – Out across the road, down and up the hill to the right side of the bush, a quick back and forth and left to her bird.



36. MORNINGSTAR’S NO TIME TO PLAY, “Legion,” LM, Joshua Lee

Legion and Joshua came to the line at 8:53 am

F – Out across the field, hunted near the guns and then up the hill to his bird!

R – Across the road and the field, to the right side of the bushes and quickly back and forth to get his bird.

Stryker and Marc came to the line at 8:49 am

F – His bird hooked backwards, but was recovered nicely!

R – Rolled down the hill arriving right of the gunners - he made a couple passes along the tree line but worked his way up the hill and onto the bird.

Smack and Zach came to the line at 8:47 am and had a No-Bird on the Flyer

F – Out across the road, came in slightly under the arc, a quick left and he had his bird.

R – Across the road and the field - came in on the right side of the shrub, a quick left to the bird.

Flash and Josh came to the line at 8:29 am

F – Quickly retrieved.

R – Fall down the hill and came in wide right - a couple loops deep along the tree line - back up the hill for a couple passes and he was on to the bird.

Quest and Darin came to the line at 8:25 am

F – Nice bird.

R – Great line right of first trees and left of the next tree for a beautiful line to the bird.

Ruth and Dennis came to the line at 8:22 am

F – Went out under the arc - turned left and got her bird.

R – Angled right of the guns down the hill to the trees - quickly worked back up the hill to her bird.

F – Came in right of the bird - quick turn and he got it!

R – Down right side to the tree line - hunted deep and right - worked back up the hill to the fall area and then his bird.

F – Out across the field and straight to her bird.

R – Angled across the road, down and up the hill to the left side of the bushes, a quick turn and she was on her bird.

F – Nice angle across the road, hunted the area - Dog had to be picked up

Reagan and Marc came to the line at 8:05 am

F – Out to the fall area - a bit of a zig zag close to get her bird.

R – Dropping down the hill, she corrected her line at the tree and arrived in the area of the fall to scoop up her bird.

Ensign and Dennis came to the line at 8:02 am

F – Very nice recovery.

R – Good line to the area but turned right under the arc of the bird and established a hunt pattern - he moved up the hill and located the bird.



20. SUNNY AND WIND NO DUCKS GIVEN, “Sunny,” LF, Caleb Brown

Sunny and Caleb came to the line at 7:58 am

F – Straight to the fall area and the bird!

R – Went out wide right deep to the tree line, hunted right and left - back to the guns and hunted down the hill side - deep to the trees again and then back up the hill to locate her bird.

Chief and Jake came to the line at 7:54 am

F – Right to the fall area and quickly got his duck!

R – Out on the right - cut across in front of the guns and went deep to the tree line for a hunt - worked his way back to the bird and got it.



3rd Series – Test Description

Day two of the 2024 National Derby Championship brings us to the Dam Field at Wood Dale Farm.

It is a crisp 45 degrees with clear skies and expected to warm up to a sunny 75 degrees by this afternoon. There is a light 2 mph north wind.

SERIES 3
Land Double with a Duck Flyer

The running mat faces north, overlooking a field that slopes sharply from left to right. The field features terraced hills and moderate cover.
 
Bird #1 is a dead hen mallard, thrown up the hill from right to left. The bird lands approximately 239 yards from the running mat, left and deep of a cluster of 3 bushes. We will refer to this bird as R for Right.
 
Bird #2 is a mallard flyer, shot up the hill from right to left. The bird lands approximately 141 yards from the running mat. We will refer to this bird as F for Flyer.

This test is taking approximately 4 minutes per dog to complete.

Flyer – Extended hunt deep right.

Right – Went down the hill on the right side - got behind the guns and hunted right. Gunners came up to help.

Good Morning! – Day 2

Good Morning Everyone and Welcome to day 2 of the National Derby!

We are kicking off this morning with the start of the 3rd Series, which will be a Land Double with a Duck Flyer. Test dogs are set to run at 7:30 am, then we will have our first running dog directly after. 

Today we have all 58 Dogs back to run this Series.

It is another crisp 45 degree morning here, with clear skies. Today has an expected high around 75 degrees and we are looking forward to sunny skies all day with very light breeze. We will post update throughout the day for any conditions that change.

2nd Series – Land Double

58 Dogs Started this Series

Test Dogs started out this series at 12:54 pm, beginning with Breeze" with handler Wayne Turczi and then "Daphne" with handler Kody Reynolds. Now that the competitors have an idea of what they might expect for this second series, our first running dog was ready to go!

Our first running dog #4 MIDDLE CREEK’S COOL ME DOWN, “Jerry,” LM, with handler Erik Thompson came to the line at 1:07 pm.

The weather during this series was sunny with a highs in the 70s and a light 7 mph wind.

3. PEPPER JACKS BLUE MACK TRUCK, “Mac,” LM, with handler Darin Quigley. They came to the line at 4:20 pm and completed the test at 4:22 pm.

58 dogs were sent from the line in this series, taking a total of 3 hours and 15 minutes, which averages out to be just over 3 minutes per dog. 

We will be moving on to the 3rd Series Tomorrow ... Callbacks and instructions will be posted next!

R – Good line, but got to the cover just missing the bird - hunted the cover and worked it out to the bird.

L – Up the hill behind the gunners, he established a hunt - expanded his hunt deep in front of the throwers - worked over towards the cover and worked it out to the bird.

R – Got into cover and came out with her bird.

L – Left of the bushes, but a quick recovery for his bird.
